ABOUT US

The Abertillery Ladies Orpheus Choir was founded in 1911 and has been an active and vibrant organisation, ever since. The choir was originally formed by Mr. Tom Bundred as a result of a group of people enjoying a sing-a-long on a return journey from Blackpool. Originally, it consisted of a very small number of people who enjoyed making music with others but then went on to become a well attended choir.

Mr Ivor Screen took over from Mr. Bundred and became conductor of both the ladies choir and the Abertillery Male Orpheus Voice Choir which had been formed in 1908. Since those early days, the choir has performed both locally and much further afield, travelling extensively in Britain and overseas.

Since its foundation numbers have varied between 30 and 60 choristers. Currently we have 37 choristers of all ages who meet on a weekly basis to practise and prepare for musical events. Many choristers are from the Abertillery area but some travel from nearby towns.

We represent a diverse cross section of the community – students, homemakers, working women and retired people. We have different experiences and varied lives but we all enjoy making music together and we value the enormous benefits gained from producing music, for the enjoyment of others.

Over the years, the choir has supported a wide range of community events, eisteddfodau, festivals and concerts. We are a self financing choir and are proud of the support we give to charitable events. Our main aim is to serve the community and to help raise funds for numerous charities and organisations.  We sing at various events and functions. We are also available for private events such as weddings or funerals although, on these occasions, it may be necessary to ask for a fee to cover the cost of travel expenses etc.

The choir has a wide repertoire consisting of religious items, sacred hymns, songs from musical shows, pop music, seasonal items, folk music and Welsh language songs.

We are pleased to encourage anyone who is interested in joining the choir. We do not require auditions or voice tests and all would be welcome, so why not give us a try?

Why not join us?

We practise at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Abertillery – Mondays at 7.00pm
