2024

Friday 1st March

The choir joined the St. David’s Day celebrations at St. Michael’s Church.

Abertillery Town Band accompanied the community singing and also delighted the audience with an enthusiastic, well played medley of brass band music. Abertillery Male Voice Orpheus Choir performed a good selection of songs from their wide repertoire and Abertillery Youth Drama and Musical Society also sang a range of songs to entertain the audience. One of their singers, Jordan Mills, performed solo pieces and showed huge potential and ability.

Poem for St Davids Day

We have mountains

We have valley,s

We have rivers that run deep

We have hilltops crowned with heather

We have hillsides white with sheep

We have coal mines

We have steelworks

We have castle,s by the score

We have lots of lovely beaches where the waves lap on the shore

We have countryside a plenty, footpaths to walk along

We always have welcome in this the land of song

We have rows of miners house,s

We have towns down by the sea

We have multicultural city,s that are homes to you and me

We have sunshine in the summer, in the winter storms and gales

We have a taste of heaven

In this our land called WALES

Sunday 3rd March

The choir was pleased to be selected as part of the Usk Choral Festival at St. Mary’s Church, in the centre of the town.

The event was very well organised and proved to be a wonderful showcase for the enormous variety of choirs taking part.

The other five choirs in our section consisted of many choristers and they filled the stage when performing their chosen pieces. Although our choir only numbered around twenty, we were complimented for our choice of music and for the quality of our sound.

It was a very uplifting event and was enjoyed by everyone. The festival is a biannual event and we are sure to apply for the next one, in 2026.

Monday 18th March

The choir went to the Bella e Buona Italian Restaurant in Brynmawr for a social evening.

It is a lovely venue with conscientious staff and is praised for the quality of the food it provides. It was great to enjoy a relaxed get together in a very pleasant setting. Several choristers suggested going there again, in the near future. Thanks must be given to Sian Jones for organising the event, it was a most enjoyable evening.

Saturday 8th June 2024
Party in the Park
The choir was delighted to support community activities taking place at Abertillery Park.
It was a warm, sunny day and the event attracted many people of all ages. It was uplifting to support a well organised afternoon, consisting of a wide range of interesting demonstrations and a variety of musical performances.
Our choir sang a range of well known pop songs and other lively pieces which proved in keeping with the relaxed, family atmosphere of the day.
Thanks must be given to Lucy Harmer and Karin Ford for organising a ‘Chocolate and Bottle Stall.’ They used generous donations of items from choristers to create an attractive, well presented stall. Tina Powell supplied a beautiful range of bric-a-brac items and Lucy’s family also helped enormously, on the day. We are very grateful that their hard work raised £340 for our funds.
We look forward to taking part again, next year.

Saturday 29th June
Summerfest in Abertillery
The choir was represented by Lucy Harmer and Karin Ford when they organised another ‘Chocolate and Bottle Stall’ as part of this annual attraction.
Once again, the choristers generously donated items for the stall and the grand total of£231.50 was raised on the day. Many thanks to Lucy and Karin for working so hard to prepare and run the stall on our behalf. Well done!

Wednesday 17th July
The choir was very pleased to be invited to a social evening with the Mynyddislwyn Ladies Choir, in Oakdale.
We received a very warm welcome and the hosts were extremely friendly and interested in our choir. Both choirs sang a small selection of musical pieces for each other.
The ladies provided refreshments and the visit proved to be a lovely, sociable event.
It was a relaxed and informal evening and it was very pleasant to share time and music with others.
We look forward to inviting the Mynyddislwyn ladies for a social evening to Abertillery in the near future.
